Jewellery Design
What is jewellery design?
This is a question we get asked all the time, "how do you design your jewellery?"
In recent years the jewellery industry has been switching more and more to Computer Aided Design or CAD. This is the process of designing a piece of jewellery using a 3D computer software instead of drawing or carving the piece from wax. This gives jewellers the opportunity to visualise details and test proportions before casting a design.
Jeremy has been making jewellery since the early 90's when CAD did not exist. He still designs all of his jewellery on paper before carving it in wax or making it out of gold. He does occasionally use CAD if a piece needs to be perfectly symmetrical, but this is very rare.
Jeremy's design process for a bespoke engagement ring might look like this:
- Initial idea & consultation with the customer.
- Sketch the design on paper.
- Carve the design out of wax then show to the customer to make sure they are happy.
- Cast the design.
- Add the finishing touches.
As the jewellery industry becomes more mass produced and CAD is becoming more prevalent, Jeremy's artisan craft is becoming rarer and therefore sought after by people wanting unique jewellery designs.
